Maria Bowman, PhD., is the Lead Scientist for the Soil Health Partnership. Maria’s primary role is to lead the scientific and data plan for the partnership, specifically overseeing its collection, organizing it, and providing analysis and summaries to the SHP field staff, farmer community, scientific community, and to SHP collaborators and partners.
Dr. Bowman comes to the SHP having worked as a research agricultural economist for the United States Department of Agriculture. She holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to her work with the USDA, Dr. Bowman was a sustainable livestock economics fellow for the Natural Resource Defense Council. She earned her Master of Science in Forest Economics and Management from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science from Juniata College.
A native of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, Maria grew up surrounded by agriculture. She makes her home with her husband in Maryland, where she enjoys gardening, cycling, hiking, relaxing around a campfire and tackling home and yard projects.
