Rooted in Data - Initial Findings

At this year’s Soil Health Summit, we were excited to present preliminary insights from the data we have been gathering on SHP fields over the last five years. We incorporated as much of the 2018 yield data as we could before the Summit in order to take a look at the impact of cover crops on corn and soybean yields, since cover crops are the most common practice that the farmers who partner with us are trialing on their fields. The data suggested that growing a cover crop didn’t have a statistically significant impact on average corn or soybean yields in our dataset from 2015 through 2018. Though we know this is not true of every farm, no significant difference in yield on average gives us a starting place to begin to look at impacts of cover crops on yield variability and under different weather conditions, as well as to look at the impact of different types of cover crops on yields.

2019 Soil Sampling Protocol

It often helps to know your destination before you start your journey. Our mission at SHP is centered on measuring and communicating the economic and environmental benefits of different farm management strategies. The first step is knowing the end goal and then working backwards with a strong plan and protocol. Proper soil testing allows you to gain a clear and concise understanding of your current soil health.

Why SHP established a safety lead

Safety is my top priority. I borrow from the operations and manufacturing mantra - our goal is to get you home safely to your families and loved ones. I have taken that mantra seriously throughout my life, especially while at McKinsey and working with the Maintenance and Reliability service line. Safety has to be the top priority for any maintenance or operations program. Providing a safe work environment will allow employees to focus on the job at hand and not be distracted with potential hazards. This mindset elevates operational excellence. It is not a surprise that the organizations that elevate employee safety also create a strong work culture for them and their customers.

“Umm… you look different?”

During our first-ever public Summit, I had the chance to meet many different people and the chance to hear their interest in soil health and this work. The Summit provided a chance for me to introduce the full (and new) team that now shapes SHP and discuss the refresh and reset that has taken place over the past seven months. On multiple occasions, people paused to tell me that they noticed something different about SHP. They said that we “looked different and felt different from others” in this space. I was not sure how to respond, and they would then continue by noting our energy, culture and the women.
